Tomato and Onion Cooked with Masoor Dal
Masoor dal combined with onion and tomatoes
(I have added a small sponge gourd chopped finely). Suits well for any flat
bread and steamed rice.

Masoor Dal
Tomato
Onion
Ginger / Garlic (minced)
Red Chilli Powder
Rasam Powder
Salt
Sugar / Jaggery

Method
1. Soak masoor dal for 2-3 hours.
2. Finely chop onion and tomato.
3. Drain the water and cook the dal in the pressure
cooker for 4-5 whistles.
4. Heat oil in a separate pan, add cumin seeds stir
for a minute and add chopped onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes.
Note: At this point you can add ginger
/ garlic and cook for 2-3 minutes.

Add tomato and
cook for 5-6 minutes. At this point add chilli powder, Rasam powder, salt and
jaggery, give a good mix and cook for 3-4 minutes.
If the tomatoes are not sour enough you can add ½
tsp. of tamarind pulp and then cook for 2-3 minutes more.
6. Mix the cooked dal and adjust the consistency by
adding water.
7. Let it boil and cook well.
8. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve.
